GSTR-2A: Meaning, Download Steps and Difference From GSTR-2B

GSTR-2A is an automatically generated, read-only GST statement that helps a registered buyer view purchase documents reported by suppliers. Learn how it gets updated, how to download it from the GST portal and what to check if an invoice is missing.

What is GSTR-2A?

Form GSTR-2A is an auto-drafted statement of inward supplies available to GST-registered recipients. It draws data from information furnished by suppliers and other relevant GST statements. Unlike a return that the buyer prepares and submits, GSTR-2A is generated by the GST system and is available for viewing or downloading.

Important: You do not file GSTR-2A, and it is not an invoice-wise confirmation that every displayed tax amount is eligible for input tax credit (ITC). Use the applicable ITC rules and GSTR-2B when reviewing credit for GSTR-3B.

Why is GSTR-2A useful for a business?

  • Visibility into supplier reporting: Check whether a supplier has reported a B2B invoice against your GSTIN.
  • Find missing documents: Spot purchase invoices or notes in your records that have not appeared in the statement.
  • Trace amendments: Review differences after suppliers add or amend eligible document details.
  • Support record checks: Compare the auto-populated statement with purchase invoices before discussing corrections with vendors.

Because GSTR-2A can change when supplier information changes, treat it as a dynamic reference statement, rather than a fixed monthly ITC decision sheet.

Where does GSTR-2A information come from?

The statement is auto-populated using relevant details reported by counterparties, including supplier outward-supply information in GSTR-1 or IFF, applicable non-resident supplier information in GSTR-5, input-service-distributor details in GSTR-6 and other relevant GST data. The fields and tables displayed depend on the nature of the reported transaction.

What information can you check?

  • Supplier GSTIN and document identifiers
  • Invoice or debit/credit note dates and numbers
  • Taxable value and reported IGST, CGST and SGST/UTGST amounts
  • Changes or amendments reported by the supplier

GSTR-2A reflects reported data; it does not replace original tax invoices, purchase books or eligibility checks.

What to do if a purchase invoice is missing in GSTR-2A

  1. Verify the invoice: Check your GSTIN, the supplier’s GSTIN, invoice number, date and tax amount against the original invoice.
  2. Check the selected period: Confirm the relevant tax period and whether the supplier has subsequently reported or amended the document.
  3. Contact the supplier: Ask them to verify the invoice in their GSTR-1/IFF or applicable return and make a permitted correction where necessary.
  4. Recheck later: Since GSTR-2A is dynamic, a correctly reported document may appear after supplier filing or amendment.
  5. Assess ITC separately: Examine GSTR-2B and the current legal requirements before claiming credit in GSTR-3B; do not claim credit merely because an entry appears in GSTR-2A.

Example: A retailer records a purchase invoice dated 8 July, but it does not appear in the GSTR-2A view for that period. The retailer should verify the GSTIN and invoice number and ask the supplier to check the reporting status. The retailer should not assume that the invoice is eligible for immediate ITC simply because a paper invoice exists.

Common reasons for a GSTR-2A mismatch

  • The supplier has not yet reported or filed the relevant invoice information.
  • The recipient GSTIN, invoice number, date or taxable/tax amount differs from the purchase record.
  • The document has been amended in a different reporting period.
  • The buyer is checking the wrong financial year or tax period.
  • The transaction is not meant to appear in the particular GSTR-2A table being reviewed.

Keep an audit trail of vendor communications and corrections. If the issue concerns eligibility or reversal of ITC, consult the applicable GST provisions and your tax adviser.

How GSTR-2A fits into GST compliance

GSTR-2A is one piece of a broader workflow. Your purchase register provides your own transaction record; GSTR-2A shows auto-drafted supplier-reported information; and GSTR-2B provides the period-based statement used for ITC review. The GST reconciliation software page focuses on matching business records with GSTR-2B, rather than explaining GSTR-2A itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GSTR-2A a return I need to file?

No. GSTR-2A is a read-only, auto-drafted statement and does not require a separate filing by the recipient.

Does GSTR-2A have a filing due date?

No. There is no separate GSTR-2A filing due date because taxpayers do not file it. The statement changes as relevant supplier information is reported.

Can I edit GSTR-2A myself?

No. If supplier-reported details are incorrect, contact the relevant supplier about correcting their permitted GST reporting.

Can ITC be claimed solely because an invoice is in GSTR-2A?

No. Eligibility depends on the GST law and applicable conditions. GSTR-2B is the principal auto-drafted ITC statement to review for the relevant period.

Why does an invoice appear in GSTR-2A but not in GSTR-2B for the same month?

The statements use different mechanisms: GSTR-2A is dynamic, while GSTR-2B is generated with reporting cut-offs. Review the supplier filing date, the applicable GSTR-2B period and any relevant IMS actions.
