NIC Code 2008 – List of NIC Codes for Various Business Types
Whether for obtaining Udyam registration, starting a company, or participating in government schemes, knowing the correct NIC code for your business type is quite essential. The NIC code, officially known as the National Industrial Classification Code, is critical to India’s economic organisation. The NIC Code system brings transparency, enhances efficiency, and contributes to the growth of India’s economy by streamlining business operations and ensuring accurate categorisation of economic activities. Let’s learn further about the NIC Code, its applications, and NIC Codes for various business types.
What is NIC Code
The National Industrial Classification Code, or NIC code, is a unique code system developed by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and the Central Statistical Office (CSO). It establishes a uniform structure for categorising economic activities based on their nature and characteristics. The NIC Code is a six-digit numerical code representing specific industries and sectors in India.
When introduced, the NIC Code was termed NIC 1987. The United National Statistical Commission, Department of Policy and Promotion, revised it into NIC 2008, making it more compatible with the international system. It further enhances the efficiency of enrollment processes.
Where is the NIC Code Required/Used?
The NIC code is required for various purposes.
- For Udyam Registration: Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in India must obtain MSME Udyam registration under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006. During registration, these businesses must provide an accurate NIC code. This helps in precise categorisation and easy identification of different businesses.
- For Company and LLP Registration: Businesses applying for Company or Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) registration through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs must incorporate the relevant NIC code. This code plays a crucial role in classifying the activities conducted by the business, streamlining compliance and data management.
- Economic Research and Analysis: NIC Codes are employed by researchers and analysts to delve into particular sectors, track patterns, and analyse economic information.
- Government policies and planning: NIC Codes aid governmental bodies in devising policies, charting economic growth, and overseeing sector-specific progress.
- Industrial studies and data gathering: NIC Codes are employed to collect data, guaranteeing uniform classification and reporting during surveys and censuses.

NIC Codes for MSMEs
The updated NIC 2008 introduces a modern industrial classification framework. Activities of the companies are initially organised into ‘Sections’ labelled alphabetically from A to U. Each section is further segmented into ‘Divisions,’ identified by a two-digit numerical code. Divisions are then broken down into ‘Groups,’ distinguished by a three-digit numerical code. Within each group, there are ‘Classes’ marked by a four-digit numerical code, and finally, each four-digit class is further divided into a five-digit ‘Subclass.’
Applicants should utilise these NIC codes for MSMEs when submitting their business registration applications. Below is the updated NIC code list for your reference.
