ISO 9000/ISO 14001 Certification Reimbursement Scheme

To encourage Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to get ISO certification for their products, the government of India, through the Development Commissioner of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (DC-MSME), has introduced the ISO 9000/ISO 14001 Certification Reimbursement Scheme. The scheme provides reimbursement for acquiring ISO Certification, which is otherwise expensive for small and medium enterprises. Through a valid ISO Certification, firms can sell their goods and products in both national and international markets. By supporting technological upgradation, quality improvement, and environmental management, the scheme enhances the SME’s competitive strength in the global market.

ISO Certification and Its Importance for SMEs

ISO Certification is an international certification that signifies that the holder (organisation) and its products adhere to international quality standards. To get this certification, the company must undergo a rigorous and detailed examination of every aspect of its product. The ISO standards comprise five documents:

  1. ISO 9000: Quality Management and Quality Assurance Standards – Guidelines for selection and use.
  2. ISO 9001: Quality systems – Model for quality assurance in design, production, installation, and servicing.
  3. ISO 9002: Quality systems – Model for quality assurance in production and installation.
  4. ISO 9003: Quality systems – Model for quality assurance in final inspection and test.
  5. ISO 14001: Environmental Management Standards – Guidelines for implementing an environmental management system.

ISO certification ensures that SMEs adhere to international quality and environmental standards, which boosts their reputation, attracts more customers, and allows them to compete effectively in domestic and international markets. It also helps in improving product quality and environmental performance.

However, SMEs need a lot of funds to attain the ISO certification, which might prevent them from applying despite offering products that meet international standards. The DC-MSME has introduced this reimbursement scheme to enable such businesses to get ISO Certifications.
